If you live in a big city, there is a good chance that you are already familiar with black businesses and their restaurants. When I travel, I always seek to discover them by following a national publication or blog that focuses on highlighting them. One example is Travel Noire, which often publishes special city guides, or Black People Eats, which highlights restaurants in seven cities.
You may even have forgotten some of the great black restaurants in your own city, like the Black Panther Party in New York City or the NAACP in Chicago.
As more and more people look for ways to support black organizations at the local and national levels, it is important to remember that one of the easiest things to do is to regularly buy and support black businesses, including restaurants, bakeries, and other food services. As a reminder of what you’re doing to find the places you love, leave great reviews, tell your friends, and continue to actively support them. Below I have listed some resources that can be used not only to find your new favorite blacks – in possession of spots, but also to continue to support those you already love.
EatOkra is the main app that focuses on finding black restaurants in many major cities and metropolitan areas. The app, which was founded in 2016 by Anthony and Janique Edwards, can help you find and bookmark them. There are more than 1700 restaurants on the app, which can be broken down by type of cuisine and mood. Let us know if you know other great restaurants in your area that others know, as well as your favorite black restaurants.
If you want to expand your efforts to other businesses, check out the Afrotech list on the app, which lists restaurants in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and other major cities. You can also try searching your city on social media, as many have created customized travel guides. Here you will find aggregated lists compiled by many individual authors in cities such as San Francisco, San Diego, Houston, Atlanta, New Orleans, Dallas, Washington, D.C. and many more.
Searching for black restaurants on Yelp or other search engines produces results, but it is not foolproof and can cause confusion.
